Dr Shi is Director of Out-Patient at Shanghai Mental Health Centre and Director Doctor at SMHC, China. He is also Professor and Associate Director of the Department of Psychiatry at the Hua Shan Hospital of Fu Dan University, as well as Doctor-in-Chief of the Department of Shanghai Mental Centre, Chair of the Shanghai Psychiatry Association, Young Member for the China Psychiatry Association and Secretary of the Chinese Psychiatry Association.

Dr Shi's areas of interest are mood disorders, anxiety disorders and psychopharmacology, particularly affecting women.

Dr Dharmono is based at the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia. He is also an Honorary Lecturer in Social Psychiatry in the Faculty of Social Science at Atmajaya Chatolic University, Jakarta, and an Honorary Lecturer in Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

Dr Dharmono is a Clinical Supervisor in the Adult Psychiatric Clinic and a Psychiatrist Consultant in several hospitals in Jakarta. He is also a member of the Indonesian Medical Association, Indonesia Psychiatric Association and the Chairman of Indonesian Forum Against Violence

Dr Dharmono's special interests are urban mental health, especially among marginalised people, and mental health problems associated with forced migration.

Dr Bae Jae-Nam

Dr Bae is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Inha University Hospital, Korea.

Dr Bae is interested in psychiatric epidemiology, community psychiatry, mental health service development and evaluation, including partial hospitalisation, occupational rehabilitation and the continuity of care in the elderly.

Dr Bae has conducted epidemiological surveys to evaluate prevalence rates and risk factors of dementia, depression and alcohol use disorders amongst the elderly.

He received his PhD degree from Seoul National University in 2001, which he undertook while serving as Director of the Community Mental Health Centre at Chung-Gu district, Inchon, and later, as Consulting Physician of Dementia Day Care Centre at Nam-Gu district, Inchon.

Dr Bae is a member of The Korean Neuropsychiatric Association and The Korean Association of Geriatric Psychiatry and has had many major articles published.

Dr Shin is Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Chonnam National University Hospital, Korea.

Dr Shin is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Neuropsychiatry at Chonnam National University Hospital in Kwangju, Korea, specialising in Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr Shin is interested in community psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry and has been involved in investigating the prevalence, risk factors and clinical characteristics of dementia in people over 65 years of age in Kwangju.

Dr Shin is also interested in genetic studies in geriatric psychiatry, having evaluated the association of the apolipoprotein allele with Alzheimer's disease.

Dr Kim is a Research Fellow in the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Seoul National University Hospital in Korea.

Dr Kim is interested in social psychiatry and psychiatric epidemiology, having taken part in a number of community mental health research projects, including:

1996 Epidemiological survey of dementia and depression in a rural community, Epidemiological survey of post-traumatic stress disorder after a flood in a rural community.

1999 Epidemiological survey of dementia and depression in a rural community (second wave), Development of a Korean version of the composite international diagnostic interview (K-CIDI) and assessment to applicability to a Korean population.

1996 - 1999 Development and implementation of community mental health programs in a rural community of Yonchon county.

2000 Epidemiological survey of dementia and depression in a rural community (third wave), Development and implementation of community mental health programs in an urban community of Puchon city.

Dr Susan, Mooi Koon Tan

Dr Tan is a Lecturer and Psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at the National University of Malaysia.

In this position, she has a dual role as clinician and academician, treating patients and also carrying out research. As an educator, Dr Tan feels privileged to impart knowledge and skills to influence future generations of young doctors and specialists into professionals who practice a culture of caring, critical thinking and excellence in learning.

Dr Tan's area of special interest is child psychiatry and she hopes to start her training in this sub-specialty at the end of 2001. In her region, there are only a handful of child psychiatrists serving a population facing rapid development and urbanisation.

Dr Ahmad Faris Abdullah

Dr Abdullah is a Clinical Specialist and Psychiatrist at the Hospital Bukit Padang, Kota Kinabalu, in Malaysia.

Dr Abdullah was trained in medicine at the University Kebangsaan, Malaysia, where he completed his post-graduate training in Psychiatry in 2000. Before embarking on his post-graduate course, Dr Abdullah worked in various general hospitals and mental institutions in Malaysia.

He now heads the Community Health Unit as a Clinical Psychiatrist at the Hospital Bukit Padang in the State of Sabah. The institution provides mental health services to 2.7 million people.

Dr Abdullah is Chairman of the Research Committee for Psychiatry in the State of Sabah, and is a member on the committee focusing on the upgrade of Psychiatric Nursing. He is also Vice-Chairman for the Psychiatric Welfare Association of Sabah, which is involved in various mental health promotional and welfare activities.

In Sabah, one of the most pressing problems among young adults suffering psychiatric illness is amphetamine abuse and dependence. There are also issues relating to the effectiveness of current psychiatric services, compliance and 'revolving door' problems, aggression, violence, quality of life for chronically ill patients, pharmacoeconomics and health economics.

Dr Sonia Rodriguez

Dr Rodriguez is Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, University of East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Centre.

After training in General/Adult Psychiatry at the University of East Ramon Magsayssy Memorial Centre, Dr Rodriquez undertook a two-year fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of the Philippines.

Dr Rodriguez is now the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of East Ramon Magsayssy Memorial Centre, where she is responsible for the formulation and implementation of the undergraduate medical curriculum and the psychiatry residency training program. She also coordinates with hospital authorities, providing psychiatric and various other mental health services to the community.

Dr Rodriguez is President and a founding member of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists of the Philippines Inc. (CAPPI), promoting the well-being of Filipino children and families through the advocacy of children's rights, education of caregivers and provision of holistic psychiatric services.

She is also a Diplomate of the Philippine Board of Psychiatry and a Fellow of the Philippine Psychiatric Association.

Dr Rodriguez's interests including Child Mental Health, specifically resiliency factors in children and adolescents, and formulating Clinical Practice Guidelines on the management of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and mood disorders.

Dr Querubin is Associate Clinical Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and Medical Specialist III at the Philippines General Hospital.

After graduating from the College of Medicine at the University of the Philippines, Dr Querubin worked in the Department of Health on such landmark projects as the National Drug Policy and the Immunisation and Diarrhoea Control Campaigns. Further developing her expertise in public health communication and health education, Dr Querubin studied Health Communications at the Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

After five years in health communications, Dr Querbin undertook Speciality Training in General Adult Psychiatry at the Philippine General Hospital and graduated as Chief Resident. Since then, she has served the University of the Philippines and the Philippine General Hospital as part of the Faculty and Consultant Staff.

Dr Querbin holds the position of Associate Clinical Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine and is visiting consultant at The Medical City in Manilla.

Dr Querubin's skills and interests revolve around communication and health education specifically focusing on the promotion of mental health and the de-stigmatisation of psychiatry and mental illness.

Dr Khan is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Post Graduate Medical Institutes, Lahore, Pakistan.

Dr Khan is a psychiatrist with a Fellowship from The College of Physicians and Surgeons in Pakistan and has experience in Adult, Child and Geriatric Psychiatry.

Dr Khan works as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Postgraduate Medical Institute in Lahore and is a visiting Psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry at Service Hospital in Lahore. Prior to this, Dr Khan was the Registrar of the Institute of Psychiatry, WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health Research.

Dr Khan has worked on many mental health programs and projects, across the stages of planning, management and implementation, including more than two years at the Aga Khan Medical Centre working on the Humanitarian Assistance Canada Project. Dr Chia Ming Chang

Dr Chang is Attending Psychiatrist, Department of Psychiatry, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, Taiwan.

Dr Chang's areas of interest are group psychotherapy, transcultural psychiatry, post-traumatic stress disorder, psycho-oncology and psychiatric ethics.

Dr Chang is the Head of Day Care Unit and is in charge of the resident and internship training program in the Department of Psychiatry at Chang Shan Medical University Hospital. He is a member of the Training Committee in Taiwan Psychiatry Society and an editor for the Chinese Group Psychotherapy journal.

Dr Chang is a consultant in the Student Counselling Center at Feng Chia University. He is also a consultant at the Taichung Disaster Mental Health Center, a consultant in the Hospice ward at Chang Shan Medical University Hospital, and a consultant at the Medical Counselling Center for Sexual Assault, Taichung.

Dr Chang has also conducted epidemiological studies into the longitudinal follow-up of the prevalence and risk factors of psychiatric disorders on the victims of earthquakes in Central Taiwan. This project is in cooperation with the Duke University and will survey the post-traumatic effects among survivors from the 1999 Taiwan earthquake.

Dr Chang is interested in the development of a psycho-oncology model for cancer patients and will study the attitudes of truth-telling among Taiwanese physicians, patients and their families.

Dr Udomratn is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Dean for Human Resources Management Affairs at the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand.

Dr Udomratn's major fields of interest and research are in anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and psychopharmacology.

He received his MD in 1980 from the Prince of Songkla University, Songkla, and, during 1988-1989, received a World Health Organisation (WHO) fellowship to work as a research fellow and visiting psychiatrist at the University Department of Psychiatry, Royal Edinburgh Hospital, and the International Medical Education, University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

He was awarded the British Council Fellowship in 1998 to attend the British Council course 'Psychogeriatrics' at the University of Nottingham, and, in 1992, to attend the British Council course 'Recent development in psychiatry' at the University of Cambridge.

In 1994, Dr Udomratn was funded by the Exchange Fellow Program of the Ministry of University Affairs in Thailand and the Ministry of Science and Research in Austria, to work as a visiting researcher at the Division of Pharmacopsychiatry and Sleep Research, Department of Psychiatry, University of Vienna, Austria.

Dr Udomratn is a former editor of the Journal of the Psychiatric Association of Thailand.
