Yvonne Stolk

Yvonne Stolk is a Clinical Psychologist and works as an Ethnic Mental Health Consultant with mental health services in the culturally diverse Western Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. Yvonne's PhD project has involved identifying issues in access to mental health services and equity in service delivery for ethnic communities. A training needs study found deficits in mental health staff's cross-cultural clinical competence and confidence and consequently, a training program in Cross-Cultural Psychiatric Assessment was developed. This 2-day training program was delivered to 88 staff in mental health crisis teams, who have a front-line role in assessing clients in crisis and in screening and arranging hospital admissions. A pre- and post-training evaluation has examined knowledge acquisition, transfer of training to clinical practice, and effects of training on rates of community contact and involuntary admission for members of ethnic communities. Yvonne has co-authored a book, based on the training program, Andary, L., Stolk, Y., & Klimidis, S. (2003). Assessing mental health across cultures. Brisbane: Australian Academic Press.
